2007 Acura Rdx
The 2007 Acura RDX offers a compelling blend of sporty performance and premium features at an attractive used car price, but it comes with a significant asterisk. While much of the Honda DNA is solid, its unique turbocharged engine and earlier-generation automatic transmission introduce specific, costly vulnerabilities that demand meticulous pre-purchase inspection and diligent ongoing maintenance. This is not a 'set it and forget it' vehicle, but a rewarding one for the informed buyer.
Why this year scores low
The K23A1's variable flow turbo is prone to oil coking (especially if synthetic oil isn't used or changed frequently), leading to premature bearing wear and wastegate actuator issues. Turbo whine, burning oil smell, and reduced boost are common symptoms. The wastegate actuator can seize.
The 5-speed automatic transmission, while generally durable in other applications, is less robust when paired with the RDX's high-torque turbo engine. Issues often stem from pressure switch failures (TSB 09-026), solenoid packs, or torque converter lock-up problems, leading to harsh shifts, delayed engagement, or eventual failure.
A common Honda/Acura weakness across various models. The A/C compressor clutch can fail, or the compressor itself can seize, often sending debris through the system. Symptoms include loud knocking, no cold air, or a burning smell.
