2000 Honda S2000
The 2000 Honda S2000 is an iconic performance roadster, but its early model year status brings specific reliability considerations that demand careful attention. While the underlying engineering is typically Honda-strong, discerning buyers must proactively address known AP1 weaknesses like valve retainers and the timing chain tensioner to unlock years of exhilarating, yet dependable, driving. This isn't a 'buy and forget' car; it's a 'buy, inspect, and enjoy responsibly' machine.
Why this year scores low
The valve retainers in early 2000-2001 AP1 models were not strong enough and are prone to cracking or deforming, especially under aggressive driving or misshifts (money shifts). This can lead to valve drop, piston contact, and catastrophic engine failure. Honda revised them in 2002.
The factory timing chain tensioner is a common failure point across S2000 models, especially AP1s.
