Ram Promaster Years to AvoidThe weakest years — and the one you should buy instead
After reviewing every Ram Promaster we've analyzed (12 years), these are the 2 weakest. Each one has either an absolute low reliability score, chronic repair issues, or unusually high ownership costs relative to other Promaster years.
Proceed with caution
2014 Ram Promaster
The 2014 RAM ProMaster, as an early model year of a new platform for the North American market, presents a moderate reliability risk. While it offers impressive cargo capacity and FWD maneuverability, buyers must be aware of its initial growing pains, particularly concerning electrical issues and the automated manual transmission. It’s a workhorse that demands diligent maintenance and careful pre-purchase inspection.
Why this year scores low
Owners frequently report issues with the Body Control Module (BCM), various sensors (ABS, wheel speed), infotainment glitches, and persistent warning lights. These often stem from faulty wiring harnesses or module failures, leading to intermittent problems or loss of critical functions.
Specifically for the EcoDiesel, the 6-speed automated manual (M40) transmission is notorious for rough, jerky shifts, premature clutch wear, and actuator failures. This can lead to drivability issues, 'limp home' mode, or complete transmission failure. The standard 6-speed automatic for the Pentastar is more robust but not immune to solenoid issues.
Given its commercial use and heavy loads, components like tie rod ends, control arm bushings, and strut mounts can wear prematurely. Owners report clunking noises, loose steering, and rapid tire wear, often requiring replacements sooner than expected.
Proceed with caution
2018 Ram Promaster
The 2018 RAM ProMaster offers robust cargo utility and a best-in-class turning radius, making it a formidable choice for businesses and conversions. However, its average reliability score is tempered by recurring electrical gremlins and notable transmission quirks, demanding a proactive ownership approach to mitigate potential downtime.
Why this year scores low
Owners frequently report issues ranging from HVAC blower motor failures and blend door actuator problems to Body Control Module (BCM) malfunctions, leading to a myriad of intermittent electrical issues and warning lights.
The 62TE 6-speed automatic transmission is prone to solenoid pack failures, resulting in harsh shifts, delayed engagements, or the vehicle entering limp mode. Fluid cooler line leaks are also not uncommon.
Due to its heavy-duty use, front control arm bushings, ball joints, and tie rod ends tend to wear out quicker than expected, leading to clunking noises, steering looseness, and alignment issues. Power steering pump whine or leaks are also reported.
