Subaru Brz Years to AvoidThe weakest years — and the one you should buy instead
After reviewing every Subaru Brz we've analyzed (13 years), these are the 2 weakest. Each one has either an absolute low reliability score, chronic repair issues, or unusually high ownership costs relative to other Brz years.

2013 Subaru Brz
The 2013 Subaru BRZ offers an exhilarating driving experience but comes with a notable asterisk: early production engine issues demand serious scrutiny. While the platform is fundamentally solid and engaging, prospective buyers must confirm critical maintenance and recall completion to avoid potentially catastrophic repairs.
Why this year scores low
The 2013 model year was subject to a recall for valve spring replacement (NHTSA Campaign 19V062000), where faulty valve springs could lead to misfires, engine damage, or stalling. Additionally, some early FA20 engines suffered from excessive RTV sealant use during assembly, which can break off, clog the oil pickup, and cause oil starvation if not mitigated.
While the Aisin 6-speed manual is generally robust, the throwout bearing is a common point of failure, often leading to squeaking or grinding noises. Aggressive driving can also lead to premature clutch wear, and some owners report clutch chatter.
Beyond the valve spring recall, some 2013 BRZs, particularly those with the original valve springs, experienced premature ignition coil or spark plug failures, contributing to misfires. This can be exacerbated by aggressive driving or if engine health isn't optimal.

2015 Subaru Brz
The 2015 Subaru BRZ stands as a truly engaging driver's car, delivering exceptional handling and an unfiltered experience that few competitors can match. However, its allure is tempered by a few significant engine-related concerns, most notably the notorious valve spring recall and potential RTV sealant issues, which demand meticulous attention before purchase. If these critical items are verified as addressed, you're looking at a fantastic, fun-to-drive coupe.
Why this year scores low
Certain valve springs were prone to cracking, leading to misfires, reduced power, or catastrophic engine failure. Subaru issued a recall (WRT-21/WRC-21, TSB 02-181-20R) for specific VINs to replace these.
Excess RTV sealant used during factory assembly can break off and clog the oil pickup tube screen, potentially leading to oil starvation and severe engine damage, especially in early models.
Owners frequently report a '3rd gear grind' or difficulty engaging third gear, and prematurely failing throwout bearings causing noise or clutch pedal issues.
