Should You Buy the 2008 Nissan Armada?

The 2008 Nissan Armada offers formidable V8 power and ample space, making it a compelling option for those needing serious capability. However, it requires a diligent pre-purchase inspection and commitment to preventative maintenance, as certain widespread issues can lead to significant repair costs. Approach this full-size SUV with caution, prioritizing models with robust service histories.

The 2008 Nissan Armada can be a robust and capable SUV, but it is not for the faint of heart or those who neglect maintenance. Its known transmission and brake issues, coupled with electrical gremlins, necessitate a thorough inspection and a budget for potential repairs. If you find a well-maintained example with me…

1
Transmissionmajor~80,000-150,000 mi

The 5-speed automatic transmission (RE5R05A) is prone to valve body failures, leading to harsh shifts, delayed engagement, or complete transmission failure. Overheating is also a common precursor to issues, particularly with heavy use or…

2
Brake Systemmoderate~20,000-70,000 mi

2008 Nissan Armada Mileage Danger Zones

The mileage windows when the 2008 Nissan Armada most commonly needs attention. Plan ahead, budget accordingly, and inspect before you cross each threshold.

30,000

Low Risk Zone

At this mileage, most Armadas should still be under their original warranty period or just beyond it. The primary concern here is diligent adherence to brake maintenance due to the vehicle's weight.

60,000

Maintenance Zone

This mileage often marks the expiration of powertrain warranties. It's a critical point for ensuring transmission fluid changes have been performed and for inspecting suspension components for early signs of wear.

90,000

Elevated Risk Zone

The 90k-100k mile range is where common weaknesses for the Armada tend to surface. Be prepared for potential transmission valve body issues, more frequent electrical gremlins, and potential exhaust manifold leaks.

120,000+

High Risk Zone

Beyond 120,000 miles, nearly all the known issues could manifest or have already been addressed. A full transmission replacement becomes a real possibility without meticulous past maintenance. Expect ongoing maintenance and repair needs.

2008 Nissan Armada Ownership Cost Outlook

What it typically costs to keep the 2008 Nissan Armada on the road. Full 5-year cost-of-ownership projection and major-failure-risk forecast are in the report.

Annual Maintenance

$600-900

Moderate Repairs

$500-2,000 occasionally for items like brake system overhauls, sensor replacements, or suspension work.

How Long Does the 2008 Nissan Armada Last?

For a 2008 Armada, I strongly recommend focusing on models with under 100,000 miles that have verifiable maintenance records. Any Armada over 120,000 miles without a documented transmission service or replacement history should be approached with extreme skepticism.

How the 2008 Nissan Armada Compares to Rivals

The Armada sits in the middle of the full-size SUV pack for reliability. It offers competitive power and features for its price point but doesn't quite match the long-term durability of its Japanese rival, the Sequoia, while often outperforming some domestic competitors in power.

More Reliable Than

  • 2008 Dodge Durango (less refined, more engine/transmission issues)
  • 2008 Ford Expedition (less powerful V8, though reliability is comparable if maintained)

Comparable To

  • 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe (similar V8 power and capability, also has some transmission and electrical quirks)
  • 2008 Toyota Tundra (similar platform, but Tundra's reliability tends to be stronger)
