Is the 2002 Acura MDX Worth Buying?
The 2002 Acura MDX offers a generally robust foundation with a powerful V6 engine and comfortable ride, making it a compelling value proposition on the used market. However, a notorious Achilles' heel in its automatic transmission demands meticulous pre-purchase inspection and a readiness to address potential issues, elevating its risk profile significantly despite other strong attributes.
While the 2002 MDX offers a comfortable, capable, and generally well-built platform, the pervasive and costly automatic transmission issues make it a 'proceed with caution' purchase. If you're willing to undertake a very thorough pre-purchase inspection and have a robust repair budget, it can still deliver a premium…

What Tends to Fail First on the 2002 Acura MDX
The systems that tend to fail first on the 2002 Acura MDX, with the typical mileage window when each becomes a concern. Detailed repair-cost ranges and exact what-to-check inspection notes are in the full report.
Known for premature failure, often involving the 2nd and 3rd gear clutch packs, torque converter shudder, and slippage. This was a widespread issue across Honda/Acura vehicles of this era, sometimes requiring full replacement or rebuilds.
Common leaks from the power steering pump, high-pressure hose, and steering rack. The pump itself can also develop a whine and eventually fail, leading to heavy steering.
Aging oxygen sensors frequently fail, triggering a Check Engine Light. Left unaddressed, this can lead to premature failure of the catalytic converters, especially if the engine runs rich.
2002 Acura MDX Mileage Danger Zones
The mileage windows when the 2002 Acura MDX most commonly needs attention. Plan ahead, budget accordingly, and inspect before you cross each threshold.
Low Risk Zone
At this mileage, the MDX is typically still under its original warranty (if applicable for a used model) and primarily requires routine maintenance like oil changes, tire rotations, and potentially its first set of brake pads/rotors.
Maintenance Zone
This mileage brings critical maintenance items into play, most notably the timing belt service if it hasn't been done based on age. It's also where the first signs of power steering leaks or subtle transmission irregularities might begin…
Elevated Risk Zone
The risk of major transmission issues significantly increases here, as do needs for suspension component replacement and oxygen sensor failures. A thorough inspection for leaks and drivetrain performance is essential.
High Risk Zone
Beyond 120,000 miles, the MDX is firmly in its 'pay to play' phase. Transmission issues become more probable, and catalytic converter failure, significant rust, and major fluid leaks are more common. Comprehensive pre-purchase inspection…

How Long Does the 2002 Acura MDX Last?
