Should You Buy the 2007 Mitsubishi Galant?

The 2007 Mitsubishi Galant offers a generally robust engine platform but is significantly hampered by its known transmission weaknesses, placing it firmly in the 'proceed with caution' category. While affordable and comfortable, potential buyers must prioritize a comprehensive pre-purchase inspection focused on drivetrain health to avoid costly surprises.

The 2007 Mitsubishi Galant can be an affordable used car, but its significant transmission liability means it's a gamble. If you find a meticulously maintained example with transmission service records, or one where the transmission has already been replaced, it might be a decent value, but do not ignore this critic…

Best Model Years

2008-2012 (later models had some transmission revisions, though still not bulletproof; V6 5-speed is marginally better)

Years to Avoid

2004-2007 (these years are most notorious for widespread 4-speed automatic transmission issues)

Biggest Strengths

  • Generally durable 4-cylinder and V6 engines (with proper maintenance)
  • Comfortable and spacious interior for its class
  • Affordable purchase price on the used market

Top Risk Areas

The systems that tend to fail first on the 2007 Mitsubishi Galant, with the typical mileage window when each becomes a concern. Detailed repair-cost ranges and exact what-to-check inspection notes are in the full report.

1
Automatic Transmissioncritical~80,000-120,000 mi

The 4-speed automatic transmission (F4A51/W4A51) is a critical weak point, prone to torque converter shudder, harsh shifts, solenoid failures, and eventual complete breakdown. This is the most common and costly major issue.

2
Rust and Corrosionmajor~60,000+ mi

Underbody components, subframes, rocker panels, and rear wheel arches are highly susceptible to significant rust and corrosion, especially in areas where road salt is used. This can compromise structural integrity and make repairs diffic…

3
Electrical System (Minor)moderate~50,000-100,000 mi

Common complaints include failed power window regulators, intermittent oxygen sensor issues leading to check engine lights, and occasionally malfunctioning climate control blend door actuators or interior lighting.

Full repair-cost ranges, fix-before-you-buy notes, and inspection checklists are in the report.

2007 Mitsubishi Galant Mileage Danger Zones

The mileage windows when the 2007 Mitsubishi Galant most commonly needs attention. Plan ahead, budget accordingly, and inspect before you cross each threshold.

30,000

Low Risk Zone

At this mileage, the Galant should be operating smoothly, with only routine maintenance required. Any issues here would point to manufacturing defects or poor early ownership.

60,000

Maintenance Zone

This mileage marks a critical service interval for V6 models (timing belt). Transmission health should be closely monitored, and signs of developing rust may appear, especially in affected climates.

90,000

Elevated Risk Zone

The risk of automatic transmission failure significantly increases here. Suspension components will likely need attention, and rust issues could become more pronounced and costly.

120,000+

High Risk Zone

Vehicles at this mileage are likely on their second transmission (or nearing its end) if the first failed. Extensive rust and numerous deferred maintenance items become critical. Major component failures become a very real possibility.

2007 Mitsubishi Galant Ownership Cost Outlook

What it typically costs to keep the 2007 Mitsubishi Galant on the road. Full 5-year cost-of-ownership projection and major-failure-risk forecast are in the report.

Annual Maintenance

$450-700

Moderate Repairs

$600-1,800 occasionally (e.g., suspension, major electrical)

How Long Does the 2007 Mitsubishi Galant Last?

Focus on examples with mileage below 80,000 miles if possible, and ensure the automatic transmission shifts smoothly and quietly throughout all gears, both hot and cold. Be extremely wary of vehicles approaching or past 120,000 miles unless the transmission has been recently replaced.

MITSUBISHI IS RECALLING 45,988 MY 2005-2007 ENDEAVOR, GALANT, ECLIPSE COUPE, AND MY 2007 ECLIPSE SPYDER VEHICLES. THE BRACKET THAT IS THE ATTACHMENT POINT FOR THE LEFT REAR FUEL TANK MOUNTING STRAP MAY HAVE BEEN IMPROPERLY FORMED DURING A METAL STAMPING PROCESS. THE PROCESS MAY HAVE CAUSED THE METAL TO HAVE A SPLIT IN THE AREA WHERE THE BOLT THAT HOLDS ONE OF THE TWO FUEL TANK STRAPS TO THE UNDERSIDE OF THE VEHICLE IS LOCATED. IN THE EVENT THE FUEL TANK IS FULL AND THE VEHICLE IS SUBJECT TO A SEVERE COLLISION, THE BRACKET MAY BREAK AND ALLOW THE FUEL TANK TO DROP DOWN, POSSIBLY CAUSING A FUEL LEAK.
