2019 Nissan Rogue: Buy or Avoid?

The 2019 Nissan Rogue is a comfortable and practical compact SUV, but its Achilles' heel remains the continuously variable transmission (CVT). While many components are robust, the significant risk of costly CVT failure means you must proceed with caution and a thorough pre-purchase inspection to ensure long-term peace of mind.

While the 2019 Nissan Rogue offers appealing practicality and comfort, the persistent and costly risk of CVT failure cannot be overlooked. This vehicle is best considered if you find one with impeccable service records, especially for the transmission, and are prepared for potential high-cost repairs down the line.…

Best Model Years

2017-2018 (slightly fewer CVT complaints than earlier years, but still a risk). Later models like 2021+ with new platforms offer different transmissions.

Years to Avoid

2013-2016 (earlier iterations of the problematic CVT)

Biggest Strengths

  • Fuel-efficient 2.5L engine
  • Spacious and versatile interior
  • Generally comfortable ride quality

2019 Nissan Rogue — Known Trouble Spots

The systems that tend to fail first on the 2019 Nissan Rogue, with the typical mileage window when each becomes a concern. Detailed repair-cost ranges and exact what-to-check inspection notes are in the full report.

1
Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT)critical~60,000-120,000 mi

The Jatco CVT (JF017E) is prone to overheating, shuddering, and complete failure due to internal component wear. Neglected fluid changes exacerbate these issues, leading to expensive replacements.

2
Electrical Systemmoderate~30,000-70,000 mi

Issues range from infotainment screen freezing or connectivity problems to backup camera malfunctions, some of which were subject to recalls. Sensor failures can also lead to warning lights.

3
Suspension Componentsmoderate~50,000-90,000 mi

While generally durable, some owners report premature wear of front control arm bushings and sway bar links, leading to clunking noises and reduced handling stability.

Full repair-cost ranges, fix-before-you-buy notes, and inspection checklists are in the report.

2019 Nissan Rogue Mileage Danger Zones

The mileage windows when the 2019 Nissan Rogue most commonly needs attention. Plan ahead, budget accordingly, and inspect before you cross each threshold.

30,000

Low Risk Zone

At this mileage, the Rogue is relatively new, requiring basic scheduled maintenance. Watch for early electrical glitches or infotainment issues that might still be covered under warranty.

60,000

Maintenance Zone

This mileage demands critical attention to the CVT. A fluid change is essential, and any signs of shuddering or hesitation should be immediately investigated. Suspension components may also begin to show wear.

90,000

Elevated Risk Zone

The risk of CVT issues significantly increases here. Be prepared for potential transmission component repair or replacement. Other age-related wear items like struts, bushings, and engine gaskets may also arise.

120,000+

High Risk Zone

Beyond 120,000 miles, the 2019 Rogue is in its highest risk zone for major component failures, especially the CVT. A thorough pre-purchase inspection and a substantial contingency fund for repairs are absolutely necessary.

2019 Nissan Rogue Ownership Cost Outlook

What it typically costs to keep the 2019 Nissan Rogue on the road. Full 5-year cost-of-ownership projection and major-failure-risk forecast are in the report.

Annual Maintenance

$400-600

Moderate Repairs

$500-1,500 occasionally (e.g., suspension work, major electrical fixes)

How Long Does the 2019 Nissan Rogue Last?

Focus on Rogues with lower mileage (under 60,000 miles) that have a documented history of consistent CVT fluid changes, as this significantly reduces the immediate risk.
