2018 RAM 2500: Buy or Avoid?

The 2018 Ram 2500 is a robust heavy-duty truck, offering immense capability and power that makes it a workhorse for demanding tasks. However, it's not without its specific weaknesses, particularly concerning the complex emissions systems on diesel models and some wear points in its front-end components. Savvy buyers will find a strong partner, but only if they are prepared for diligent maintenance and potential specialized repairs.

The 2018 Ram 2500 is an incredibly capable truck that delivers on its promises of power and comfort for heavy-duty work. However, buyers must approach the diesel variants with a clear understanding of the substantial risks and costs associated with its emissions system, and all models require vigilant attention to f…

Best Model Years

2019+ (newer generations saw some improvements in technology and refinement, though emissions systems remain complex for diesels)

Years to Avoid

None outright to avoid, but models without comprehensive service records or evidence of previous front-end repairs should be approached with extreme skepticism.

Biggest Strengths

  • Exceptional towing and hauling capability
  • Durable Cummins diesel (core engine) and Hemi gas powertrains
  • Comfortable interior for a heavy-duty truck

2018 RAM 2500 — Known Trouble Spots

The systems that tend to fail first on the 2018 RAM 2500, with the typical mileage window when each becomes a concern. Detailed repair-cost ranges and exact what-to-check inspection notes are in the full report.

1
Diesel Emissions System (Cummins)major~60,000-120,000 mi

The Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve/cooler, and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR)/DEF system are prone to clogging, sensor failures, and fluid contamination, leading to costly repairs and 'limp mo…

2
Front Suspension & Steeringmoderate~50,000-100,000 mi

Ball joints, tie rods, drag links, and track bar components wear out prematurely, especially on trucks that frequently tow, haul heavy loads, or have aftermarket lifts/larger tires. This can lead to loose steering, premature tire wear, a…

3
Electrical / Infotainmentminor~30,000-70,000 mi

The Uconnect system can experience freezing, slow responses, and connectivity issues. Other electrical concerns include trailer wiring shorts, battery drain, and occasional sensor failures related to ABS or drivetrain. Recalls have addre…

Full repair-cost ranges, fix-before-you-buy notes, and inspection checklists are in the report.

2018 RAM 2500 Mileage Danger Zones

The mileage windows when the 2018 RAM 2500 most commonly needs attention. Plan ahead, budget accordingly, and inspect before you cross each threshold.

30,000

Low Risk Zone

At this mileage, the truck is still relatively new. Focus on routine fluid changes (oil, filters) and monitoring for any early electrical glitches or unusual noises from the suspension.

60,000

Maintenance Zone

This mileage often marks the onset of more significant wear. Pay close attention to tire wear, brake condition, and the overall tightness of the front suspension and steering components. Diesel emissions system issues may begin to surfac…

90,000

Elevated Risk Zone

Major service items typically come due around this mileage. Expect to address front suspension components, potentially transmission fluid changes (if not already done), and increased vigilance on the diesel emissions systems, which are m…

120,000+

High Risk Zone

Beyond this point, you're entering the territory where major component failures become more likely. Maintenance records are paramount. Expect to budget for more extensive repairs, potentially including turbocharger issues on diesels, mor…

2018 RAM 2500 Ownership Cost Outlook

What it typically costs to keep the 2018 RAM 2500 on the road. Full 5-year cost-of-ownership projection and major-failure-risk forecast are in the report.

Annual Maintenance

$600-1,000 (gas), $800-1,500 (diesel)

Moderate Repairs

$500-2,500 occasionally (e.g., front end work, minor electrical issues)

How Long Does the 2018 RAM 2500 Last?

For gas models, well-maintained examples can easily reach 200,000 miles. Diesel models with a robust maintenance history and regular highway use can exceed 300,000 miles, but expect significant emissions system investment around 100,000-150,000 miles.

What 2018 RAM 2500 Owners Actually Say

What Owners Love

  • Exceptional towing and hauling capacity, rarely feeling underpowered.
  • Comfortable and spacious interior, making long trips more bearable.
  • Powerful engine options (both Hemi and Cummins provide strong performance).
  • Smooth ride quality for a heavy-duty truck, especially with rear coil springs.

Common Frustrations

  • Poor fuel economy, especially with the Hemi or when towing heavily with the Cummins.
  • High cost and complexity of diesel emissions system repairs.
  • Frequent front suspension/steering component replacements are costly and annoying.
  • Uconnect infotainment system can be frustratingly slow or glitchy.

Who Should Buy the 2018 RAM 2500?

Best For

  • Individuals who frequently tow heavy trailers (RVs, car haulers, livestock)
  • Contractors or tradespeople requiring significant payload and durability
  • Owners who regularly drive long distances and can allow diesel regeneration cycles

Not Ideal For

  • Commuters or those primarily driving short distances (especially diesel models)
  • Budget-conscious buyers unwilling to spend on specialized maintenance and repairs

How the 2018 RAM 2500 Compares to Rivals

The Ram 2500 excels in interior comfort and overall ride quality for a heavy-duty truck. While competitive in towing and powertrain, its diesel emissions system can be more troublesome than rivals, and front-end wear is a known and shared weakness across HD trucks.

More Reliable Than

  • Older generation Ram HD models (in terms of interior comfort and technology)

Comparable To

  • Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD (L5P Duramax is generally seen as more reliable on emissions than Cummins, but still complex)
  • GMC Sierra 2500HD
