2014 RAM 1500: Buy or Avoid?

The 2014 RAM 1500 offers impressive capability and a comfortable ride, but it's a vehicle you must approach with a keen eye for known problem areas. While the powertrains are generally robust, key systems like the optional air suspension and integrated electrical module can be financial pitfalls if not thoroughly inspected, making a pre-purchase inspection absolutely non-negotiable.

While a compelling truck in many aspects, the 2014 RAM 1500 carries several well-documented and potentially expensive reliability risks. If you find a well-maintained example, ideally without the air suspension, and are prepared for potential exhaust manifold or electrical repairs, it can be a good value. Otherwise,…

Best Model Years

2018 (end of generation, most issues resolved, still no eTorque), 2013-2017 with standard coil suspension.

Years to Avoid

Early 4th generation models (2009-2012) had more transmission and TIPM issues, and models with the EcoDiesel without a clear service history.

Biggest Strengths

  • Robust Hemi engine performance (when maintained)
  • Generally strong 8-speed automatic transmission
  • Comfortable ride quality and well-appointed interior

2014 RAM 1500 — Known Trouble Spots

The systems that tend to fail first on the 2014 RAM 1500, with the typical mileage window when each becomes a concern. Detailed repair-cost ranges and exact what-to-check inspection notes are in the full report.

1
Air Suspension Systemmajor~50,000-100,000 mi

The optional four-corner air suspension system is prone to leaks from air bags, failing compressors, or faulty ride height sensors. This leads to the truck sagging, failing to level, or being stuck at one height. Repairs are often expens…

2
Electrical (TIPM)major~60,000-120,000 mi

The Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) on these trucks can fail, causing a multitude of seemingly unrelated electrical problems such as fuel pump not priming, horn going off randomly, power windows not working, or starter motor issue…

3
Engine (Hemi Exhaust Manifolds)moderate~70,000-130,000 mi

The 5.7L Hemi engine is notorious for breaking exhaust manifold bolts, leading to an audible exhaust leak, particularly when cold. This is due to expansion/contraction cycles and often requires drilling out broken studs, a labor-intensiv…

Full repair-cost ranges, fix-before-you-buy notes, and inspection checklists are in the report.

2014 RAM 1500 Mileage Danger Zones

The mileage windows when the 2014 RAM 1500 most commonly needs attention. Plan ahead, budget accordingly, and inspect before you cross each threshold.

30,000

Low Risk Zone

At this mileage, most issues are minor warranty items or routine maintenance. Focus on ensuring proper fluid changes and inspecting brake wear. Early Uconnect glitches might surface.

60,000

Maintenance Zone

This is where more significant maintenance items become due, and some known weaknesses begin to show. Pay close attention to air suspension health and listen for exhaust manifold leaks on Hemi models.

90,000

Elevated Risk Zone

Major electrical component failures like the TIPM become more prevalent here, along with worsening air suspension issues. Comprehensive inspections are critical to avoid major repair bills.

120,000+

High Risk Zone

Beyond 120k miles, expect age and mileage to take their toll. All previously mentioned issues become more likely. Budgeting for potentially major repairs, especially if the air suspension or TIPM haven't been replaced, is essential.

2014 RAM 1500 Ownership Cost Outlook

What it typically costs to keep the 2014 RAM 1500 on the road. Full 5-year cost-of-ownership projection and major-failure-risk forecast are in the report.

Annual Maintenance

$500-800

Moderate Repairs

$700-1,800 occasionally

How Long Does the 2014 RAM 1500 Last?

For best long-term reliability, target models under 75,000 miles with a complete service history, especially for those equipped with the optional air suspension, as its lifespan often dictates future repair costs.

Safety Recalls on the 2014 RAM 1500

17 recalls on record from NHTSA. Check your VIN atnhtsa.gov to see if the repair was performed.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE:DIESEL

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2018 Ram 1500 and 2014-2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles equipped with 3.0L diesel engines. The crankshaft position sensor tone wheel may delaminate causing the engine to lose its ability to synchronize the fuel injector pulses and cam shaft timing, possibly resulting in an engine stall.

LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES:TAILGATE:LATCH

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2015-2017 Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 pickup trucks equipped with an 8 foot bed and a power locking tailgate. Chrysler is also recalling all 2013-2014 and 2018 Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 pickup trucks built before April 1, 2018 with a 6 or 8 foot bed and a power locking tailgate. On August 29, 2019 Chrysler expanded the recall to include an additional 693,128 model year 2013-2014 Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 pickup trucks. The tailgate actuator limiter tab may fracture and cause the tailgate to unlatch and open while driving.
