Is the 2015 RAM 1500 Worth Buying?

The 2015 Ram 1500 offers impressive capability and a comfortable ride, particularly with its optional air suspension. However, potential owners must be prepared for common issues like air suspension failures, exhaust manifold leaks, and Uconnect glitches that can lead to significant repair costs. It's a truck that demands diligent pre-purchase inspection and proactive maintenance to ensure a positive ownership experience.

The 2015 Ram 1500 is a compelling choice for its comfort and capability, but its known issues, particularly with the air suspension and exhaust manifolds, mean potential buyers must exercise significant caution. A meticulous pre-purchase inspection is not just recommended, it's mandatory. Be prepared for potential r…

Best Model Years

2017-2018 (late 4th Gen for improved reliability, before 5th Gen launch)

Years to Avoid

2012-2014 (earlier 4th Gen had more pronounced TIPM and Uconnect issues)

Biggest Strengths

  • Robust 5.7L Hemi V8 engine (when manifold issues are addressed)
  • Smooth 8-speed automatic transmission
  • Class-leading ride quality and comfortable interior

What Tends to Fail First on the 2015 RAM 1500

The systems that tend to fail first on the 2015 RAM 1500, with the typical mileage window when each becomes a concern. Detailed repair-cost ranges and exact what-to-check inspection notes are in the full report.

1
Air Suspension Systemmajor~60,000-100,000 mi

The optional four-corner air suspension is a common failure point. Components like the compressor, air bags (springs), and associated sensors can fail, leading to leaks, sagging, and an inability to adjust ride height. This often occurs…

2
Exhaust Manifold Bolts (5.7L Hemi)moderate~70,000-120,000 mi

The exhaust manifold bolts, particularly on the 5.7L Hemi engine, are prone to breaking due to thermal expansion and contraction cycles. This leads to exhaust leaks, often identified by a ticking or tapping noise, especially when cold. I…

3
Uconnect Infotainment & Electricalmoderate~30,000-90,000 mi

The Uconnect system can suffer from freezing, lagging, or black screens, requiring software updates or module replacement. Beyond the infotainment, general electrical gremlins such as HVAC blend door actuator failures, power window issue…

Full repair-cost ranges, fix-before-you-buy notes, and inspection checklists are in the report.

2015 RAM 1500 Mileage Danger Zones

The mileage windows when the 2015 RAM 1500 most commonly needs attention. Plan ahead, budget accordingly, and inspect before you cross each threshold.

30,000

Low Risk Zone

At this mileage, most issues are typically minor electrical gremlins or Uconnect software problems. It's an opportune time for routine fluid changes and tire rotations.

60,000

Maintenance Zone

This mileage often calls for more comprehensive service, including spark plugs (Hemi), differential fluid changes, and potential replacement of brake components. Air suspension issues may begin to surface.

90,000

Elevated Risk Zone

Beyond 90k, the risk of more significant mechanical issues increases. Exhaust manifold bolts are a common concern, as are aging suspension components and continued air suspension problems.

120,000+

High Risk Zone

At this stage, be prepared for potential major component wear. This includes higher likelihood of air suspension rebuilds, transmission service needs, and potential engine component failures if maintenance has been neglected.

2015 RAM 1500 Ownership Cost Outlook

What it typically costs to keep the 2015 RAM 1500 on the road. Full 5-year cost-of-ownership projection and major-failure-risk forecast are in the report.

Annual Maintenance

$500-800

Moderate Repairs

$600-1,800 occasionally (e.g., exhaust manifold, Uconnect module)

How Long Does the 2015 RAM 1500 Last?

Focus on trucks with diligent service records. While high mileage can be a concern for air suspension, a well-maintained high-mileage unit (120k+) that has already had major components replaced might be a better value than a lower-mileage unit where these failures are still pending.

2015 RAM 1500 Recall History

18 recalls on record from NHTSA. Check your VIN atnhtsa.gov to see if the repair was performed.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE:DIESEL

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2018 Ram 1500 and 2014-2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles equipped with 3.0L diesel engines. The crankshaft position sensor tone wheel may delaminate causing the engine to lose its ability to synchronize the fuel injector pulses and cam shaft timing, possibly resulting in an engine stall.

LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES:TAILGATE:LATCH

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2015-2017 Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 pickup trucks equipped with an 8 foot bed and a power locking tailgate. Chrysler is also recalling all 2013-2014 and 2018 Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 pickup trucks built before April 1, 2018 with a 6 or 8 foot bed and a power locking tailgate. On August 29, 2019 Chrysler expanded the recall to include an additional 693,128 model year 2013-2014 Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 pickup trucks. The tailgate actuator limiter tab may fracture and cause the tailgate to unlatch and open while driving.
